Until now, permanently installed condition monitoring was too expensive for large-scale use. Most motors just ran until they failed.

ABB have changed all of that, enabling the cost of a unit to pay for itself in less than a year. This extra affordability means you can take your LV motor demands as far as they need to go; we often supply equipment for a plant’s entire motor fleet.

It means maintenance can be planned. Costs are reduced, while big data is fed from every device into plant-wide optimisations. You’re able to spend less, stay aware, and modernise your equipment for future improvements.


How does it work?

It all starts with a compact sensor unit, which easily attaches to motors without wires. Select ranges of ABB LV motors can be factory-fitted in advance. However, we also have retrofitted kits to upgrade what you have already.

The sensors are compatible with almost every LV motor from ABB or any other vendor. At a width of 10mm, they’re also incredibly adaptable.

Mounting and configuring the sensors only takes a few minutes. Simply follow these six steps:

1) The sensor receives signals from the motor. It takes measurements like vibration and temperature at regular intervals.

2) Download the ABB Ability™ Smart Sensor app to your smartphone. Future releases will see an ABB gateway and secure cloud-based server too.

3) Information from the motor is sent via Bluetooth®. All of this data is encrypted.

4) Advanced algorithms analyse the data for a clear result.

5) These results are sent to your smartphone and dedicated ABB Ability™ Smart Sensor portal.

6) Trend analysis continues. You build a complete picture of the motor’s performance over time.

An intuitive interface

Once you’ve downloaded the ABB Ability™ Smart Sensor app, you have a constant link to ABB sensor tech and can check their status at any time.

A ‘traffic light’ display has been added for ease of use. Every motor has a light, and every light has a colour. You’ll receive tips on how to approach maintenance and save costs.

  • RED
    critical issue – failure likely soon. Take action as soon as possible.
  • YELLOW
    operation can continue but the motor should be watched closely and serviced at the next available opportunity.
  • GREEN
    motor fine – operation can continue.
