Helical bevel gearboxes offer reliable power transmission in industrial machinery. You will find them in industries that power agitators, mixers and extruders. But what exactly are these gearboxes, and how do they work? Let’s explore the makeup and functions of helical bevel gearboxes to help you understand why they might be the right option for your power transfer needs.

What is a Helical Bevel Gearbox?

A helical bevel gearbox combines the strengths of bevel gears and helical gears into one powerful mechanism. Bevel gears transfer power at 90-degree angles and are used when you need to change the direction of a rotating shaft. Helical gears have teeth cut at an angle, which delivers a smoother, quieter operation than straight-cut alternatives. These two gear types work together in a helical bevel gearbox, meaning you get the benefit of both systems – smooth transmission of power at a right angle and reduced noise and vibration. So helical bevel gearboxes excel in applications where low noise levels and high torque output are preferred.

What’s the Mechanism?

Input Coupling

Think of a helical bevel gearbox like a translator for power. Energy from the motor is delivered to the input shaft via the input coupling. This is where power enters the gearbox and begins its journey. It may also help absorb slight misalignment or vibration, protecting both the motor and gearbox.

Gear Set

Inside the gearbox, the input shaft drives the pinion, a small bevel gear with helical teeth. This pinion engages with a larger bevel gear (crown gear) mounted on the output shaft.
As the pinion rotates, it turns the crown gear, changing the direction of power while adjusting speed and torque to suit the application.

Output Coupling

The transformed power then flows through the output shaft and out through the output coupling, which connects the gearbox to your equipment. It transfers the adjusted speed and torque from the gearbox to the application.

Bearings, Seals and Gaskets

Bearings reduce friction and wear, keeping everything running smoothly. Seals and gaskets retain lubricants inside the gearbox while preventing dirt and contaminants from getting in.

Cooling System

For heavy-duty or continuous operation, a cooling system removes excess heat to keep the gearbox operating within the ideal temperature range.

Breather Plug

This is a small vent that allows air to move in and out of the gearbox. As the gearbox heats up during operation, the air and oil inside expand. The breather prevents pressure build-up, which could otherwise cause leaks or damage seals.

Drain Plug

This is located at the lowest point of the gearbox and is used to remove old oil. During maintenance, you open the drain plug to drain the oil, making oil changes quick and clean.

Housing

All these components are enclosed within a strong gearbox housing that protects them from harsh industrial environments.

Benefits

Helical bevel gearboxes are designed to deliver high power and torque in a compact and efficient unit. This means you can get strong performance without needing large, bulky equipment.
The helical gear design is advantageous because the angled teeth increase the contact area between gears, allowing them to withstand greater loads than straight-cut gears. At the same time, these teeth engage gradually rather than all at once, which reduces shock, vibration and noise.

Flexibility is another benefit, as these gearboxes can be set to a variety of gear ratios and adjusted to slow down for control or increase torque as the application demands. They also come in different mounting options, such as shaft-mounted or flange-mounted designs, making them easier to integrate into a variety of systems.

You also have varying options for the output shaft. Solid shafts provide maximum strength and rigidity for heavy-duty applications with high loads. Hollow shafts, on the other hand, offer a smart space-saving solution by allowing cables, pipes or other components to pass through the centre, which simplifies your overall system design.

To support all of this performance, helical bevel gearboxes are typically fitted with tapered roller bearings. These are specifically designed to handle both radial (side) and axial (thrust) loads simultaneously. The result is a more stable, durable gearbox that can operate reliably under demanding conditions.
